The Dog's Honest TruthSo… you’ve brought home a tiny, wiggly ball of fur. Congrats! 🎉 You’ve officially joined the elite club of people who will never eat dinner in peace again (but hey, you’ll have the cutest shadow following you everywhere).
Puppies are amazing, but they also come with a user manual nobody actually gives you. So here are some top tips to keep both you and your pup sane:
Your puppy is basically a teething toddler with razor-sharp teeth. They’ll chew everything — socks, furniture, your phone charger, your dignity. Chew toys = lifesavers.
Decide early: couch dog or no couch dog? Bed or no bed? If you keep changing the rules, your puppy will 100% take advantage of you. (Spoiler: they’re smarter than they look.)
House training takes time. You will step in a puddle at 3 a.m. You will question your life choices. But remember — every accident is just one step closer to success.
Expose your pup to new people, dogs, sounds, and situations early on. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a dog who thinks the vacuum cleaner is a monster sent from another dimension.
Treats + praise = magic. Reward the good stuff and your pup will repeat it. (Honestly, it works on humans too. Try giving your partner a cookie when they do the dishes.)
Hide wires, move plants, pick up anything small enough to be swallowed. Basically, think of your puppy as a Roomba with teeth — if it’s on the floor, they’ll try to eat it.
It’s messy. It’s loud. It’s exhausting. But one day you’ll look back on those tiny paw prints and sleepless nights and miss them (…okay, maybe not the puddles, but definitely the puppy cuddles 🥹).
Bringing home your first puppy is like signing up for the best (and most chaotic) adventure ever. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll probably have to buy new shoes… but you’ll also gain a best friend for life.
